About a year ago, my older sister, Anne, suddenly chose me to be her bridesmaid at her wedding. This surprised me because since childhood, Anne had promised her best friend Ruby that she would be Ruby’s bridesmaid. Throughout the wedding preparations, everyone asked Anne about this, but she never explained.
On the big day, Ruby was still at the wedding but stood in the back wearing a rather unusual dress, a bit strange but typical for her style. Anne felt overshadowed and intended to pour champagne on Ruby’s dress to embarrass her. Fortunately, I stopped her in time. When I tried to talk to Anne, she screamed loudly, drawing everyone’s attention. I had to seriously warn her to stop or I would leave the wedding immediately. Anne blushed, became silent, and went into the bathroom.
The atmosphere at the wedding became tense and uncomfortable, and I didn’t speak to Ruby afterward. Since then, Anne kept insulting Ruby, saying their friendship was over, never blaming me, which felt strange because she blamed everything on Ruby without any clear reason.
One day, after Anne harshly scolded Ruby again, I couldn’t stand it and told her Ruby had been her best friend for a long time, Anne should know Ruby’s style and talk directly if there was a problem instead of behaving like that. But Anne got angry, sent harsh messages to Ruby, and insulted me as well.
My mother advised Anne to apologize to Ruby for sending those bad messages and yelling at me, but Anne refused to talk to Mom. My father sided with Anne. The situation became tense, and I didn’t know what to do.
The Shocking Revelation
Things got more complicated when Anne’s husband, Dave, asked me to talk to Anne because they had a big fight. Dave said he wanted Ruby to be the “best woman” (female equivalent of best man), while Anne wanted Ruby to be the maid of honor, but Anne refused to compromise and decided to remove Ruby from both roles. Dave explained he had told Ruby about this clearly, which caused the argument between them.
I was confused because if this was such a big deal, Ruby would definitely remember it, and I didn’t understand why Dave wanted Ruby to be the best woman when he had only met her after dating Anne.
Later, Dave called me to ask if anyone in the bridal party had behaved badly toward me. I said no. He also asked if Ruby knew she was going to be the best woman, and I said I wasn’t sure since everything was very secretive. Ruby also messaged me asking what was going on.
The Truth Comes Out
Finally, everything was revealed on a day full of tears and arguments. Anne had lied to everyone. It turned out Dave had a past of drug addiction and had been in prison. Ruby was Dave’s close friend before he met Anne and had helped him a lot during his hard times. When Dave and Anne started dating, Anne was ashamed of Dave’s past and lied to our family, saying they met on a dating app to hide the truth.
Dave wanted everyone to know and accept him as he is now, but Anne was too afraid to admit this to my family and even forged a letter from our family to convince Dave that we accepted him.
As the wedding day approached, Dave wanted Ruby to be the best woman, Anne wanted her to be maid of honor, but Anne feared the truth about Dave would be exposed, so she purposely created conflicts and removed Ruby from the wedding to keep the secret. Anne also made up stories to ruin Ruby’s image among the other bridesmaids, saying Ruby caused trouble, would create chaos, and tried to get close to the groomsmen.
My father criticized everyone for having to listen to Anne because she was the bride, while my mother asked Anne to apologize to Ruby. Dave grew more suspicious, called and asked everyone, finally learned the truth, and kicked Anne out of the house. Anne admitted everything, apologized, and felt deeply guilty and remorseful.
Consequences and the Future
Anne is currently very unhappy and feels isolated because my mother cannot forgive her, and my father is shocked and sad. Ruby is still angry and not ready to talk to Anne.
Dave is the most hurt, feeling deeply betrayed. He shared the story with friends and is seeking counseling to overcome the shock. He wants to keep distance from my family and is uncertain whether he wants to continue his marriage with Anne.
Anne has finally started therapy to understand the reasons behind her behavior, hoping to improve and repair relationships.
I still feel heartbroken seeing my sister become a completely different person from before, but I hope one day we will understand each other better and heal these wounds.
